Joanne van der Leun

Dean at Leiden Law School, Professor of Criminology at Leiden Law School, Leiden UniversitySince 2001 Professor Van der Leun is working as a criminologist at Leiden Law School. She was one of the pioneering staff members of the Criminology BA program at Leiden Law School.
She was trained at Utrecht University in Interdisciplinary Social Sciences (MA) and holds a PhD d in Sociology (Erasmus University 2001).
Her research interest lie in the field of crime, security, migration and crimmigration. She has primarily been involved in interdisciplinary research projects, both nationally and internationally. Her research is embedded in the research programme Criminal Justice: Legitimacy, Accountability and Effectivity and the profile area Interaction between legal systems.
Within the research project “Getting to the Core of Crimmigration” Professor Van der Leun co-supervises the PhD projects:
- “Agents of Change? (Hi)stories, perspectives and everyday practices of intra-Schengen border officials. Human agency and street-level discretionary decision making in matters of cross-border mobility” and
- “Vertical interventions? The local politics of crimmigration control in intra-Schengen borderlands.”
