Maartje van der Woude is Professor of Sociology of Law at the Van Vollenhoven Institute for Law, Governance and Society. During the period 2017-2020 she is also a visiting research professor at the Department for Criminology and Sociology of Law at the University of Oslo (Norway).
Prof. van der Woude’s expertise lies in legal and social matters related to (counter)terrorism, (border)security and immigration, and the growing interconnectedness of all three. This is also referred to as the process of crimmigration or the securitization of migration. Her current NWO funded research project “Getting to the Core of Crimmigration” on intra Schengen border control and border communities takes an interdisciplinary approach by focusing both on the legal normative questions as well as the empirical questions. This research project is an expansion of a recent pilot study into intra-Schengen border management by the Dutch Military and Border Police (Koninklijke Marechaussee) in the Netherlands.
In addition to to her main research project, she is responsible for a project on migration and border matters as part of the project "NORDHOST: Nordic Hospitalities in a Context of Migration and Refugee Crisis", coordinated by senior professors from the University of Oslo.
